Introduction
The town Hluboka nad Vltavou is famous for its beautiful castle built in Windsor Neogothic style. The castle is situated in amazing gardens in the middle of large English park. Very close to the castle there is Alsova Jihoceska Galerie (Als's South Bohemian Gallery) with its unique exposition of the Czech Mediaeval arts (famous collection of Gothic sculptures of Madonna) as well as the 20th century art. Many concerts of classical music take place there as well.
History in brief
The massive romantic castle, originally a Gothic castle from the 13th century, was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century in a Baroque style. In the 19th century the castle was rebuilt into representative residence of a noble family of Schwarzenberg in English Windsor Gothic style.
Description
The impressive castle stands on the ground plan of an irregular pentagon. The castle buildings stand around the small and large courtyard. The entrance frontage has a shape of a trilateral face. In the middle there is an entrance tower. The towers are octagonal. The picturesque appearance of the castle is enhanced by oriels, pillars, galleries, battlements, embrasure, gargoyles and other details of Gothic forms.
You can also find an indoor garden, riding-school, English park of an area of 190 hectares, comfortably furnished luxurious interiors with unique woodcutting and precious collections.
